Reading Specialist Practicum for Elementary Teachers

Practicum in working with elementary students with special reading problems. The class will concentrate on diagnosis and remediation of reading problems, use of data-driven instruction, and understanding of the affective and cognitive domains in reading instruction in the areas of phonics, phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Understanding of student motivation, self-confidence, and willingness to learn to read will be demonstrated in one-on-one conferences with the practicum student and elementary student. The practicum student will document 24 hours of seminar participation and 120 hours of classroom application of the latest reading research knowledge in assisting students in developing proficient reading strategies.
