History of Latin America

Survey of the history of Latin America from the colonial period to the present. The study of the development of colonial structures, the impact of colonization on the native peoples, the struggle for independence, colonial legacies, economic dependency, and ethnic, gender, and class relations helps students to gain an understanding of the major themes in Latin American history. The class also considers the relationship between Latin American countries and the United States, as well as political and social movements throughout the region. The class considers examples from the histories of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Course meets multicultural graduation requirement.
