Theory I is designed to introduce students to some of the materials and structures of certain styles of tonal and modal music. The course begins with a brief review of fundamentals before moving quickly into the understanding of two important kinds of notational shorthand. The second half of the course is concerned primarily with the study of counterpoint. These studies will prepare students to engage two topics critical to the success of a musician: interpretation and expression. Perquisite: MUSC 4 or placement by exam at the time of university enrollment.
