A historical study of the form and function of visual images in Western Europe and the United States from 1880 to 1960. Special attention will be given to the rejection of optical naturalism, to the emergence of psychoanalysis, to the World Wars, and to the development of modernism in various intellectual circles. Van Gogh, Czanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Pollock are some of the major artists studied. Slide lectures and class discussions, a research paper is required
