Introduction to Ceramics

This course introduces students to the basic components of ceramics, including the construction of three-dimensional forms and the organization of space. Students will learn traditional and contemporary methods of working with clay and glazes. Course work addresses visual problems and solutions specific to ceramics, the texture of materials, and the manipulation of space. Visual acuity and technical abilities will be reinforced through readings, discussions, demonstrations, critiques, and lectures. The history of ceramics and critical approaches to the media will lead to an understanding of how three-dimensional forms give shape to ideas and beliefs. No prerequisite
