This course examines the emergence and institutionalization of human rights in the international arena. It analyzes the idea of human rights and examines the place of this idea in particular areas of concern, such as race, gender, religion, and the meeting of basic material needs. It questions the assertion and defense of human rights, by examining issues such as genocide, displaced persons, humanitarian intervention, and the role of international organizations. This course satisfies Global & Historical Studies core
