Sex, Gender & Culture

Students are urged to take ANT 100, Human Diversity or ANT 102, Study of Culture before taking this course. Exploration of the cultural construction of gender from an anthropological perspective. Includes an examination of the different ways in which males and females are thought of, treated, and expected to behave in different cultural settings, taking into account aspects of gender systems such as division of labor, stratification, gender roles, and their variation throughout the life cycle. Emphasis on American culture and its constructions of gender as they vary by ethnicity, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.
