Theories of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language

This course thoroughly explains and interprets all aspects of the theories and principles of teaching Chinese as a second language (CSL). This course covers curriculum design research and development, teaching materials, teaching models, teaching strategies, teaching skills, assessments, and professional development for teachers. Through this course and related literatures, students will learn the history and current status of teaching CSL. Students will also gain insight into current obstacles in CSL teaching, recognize the problems, and be able to carry out related research in CSL pedagogy. Included in the course is a focus on the theories of teaching strategies and the ability to analyze the strategies critically. Moreover, through this course, the students should have the ability to conduct "action research" as part of professional development and deeply understand language-teaching policies around the world, including Chinese teaching policies.
