H: History of the American West - Honors

This course examines the significance of the Trans-Mississippi West in United States History from various interpretive perspectives. Topics include: nineteenth century exploration and settlement; impact of environment on evolution of western economics; race and ethnic relations; gender roles; the cowboy legacy; frontier violence; the West as myth and symbol; federal land and wilderness policies; the urban West, and tourism and national parks.
