The course starts with a geographical and historical background that illustrates questions of historical continuity and processes of transformation. The course proceeds chronologically, focusing on the crucial historical junctions that influenced and shaped the region today. Students will become familiar with the sources of Byzantine history and understand the historical place allocated for Byzantium within the World civilizations. The course also provides insights into Byzantine art architecture, literature, and theology.
