Critical Issues in Classroom Management, Ethics, Law and Safety

The purpose of this course is to introduce basic skills and knowledge for creating a safe environment that encourages learning, positive social interaction, and effective communication among students of diverse gender, ability, culture, language, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. The course emphasizesattitudes, language patterns, communication, values, and behaviors for eliciting and maintaining student learning as well as on-task behaviors. Included are methods and strategies for communicating and working safely and effectively with students, other school professionals, community members, and parents. The course examines public and private school law as it affects teachers' legal rights and legal responsibilities to students. The course covers ethical issues relevant to teaching and the development of one's personal professional ethics. This course is a 7 week class offered during the FA, SP and SUterms.
