Required of all second-year medical students. This course examines the structure, genetics, metabolism, and physiology of microbial organisms through both lecture and lab. Additional topics of study include antibiotic action and resistance; the role of immune responses in allergy, organ rejection, microbial infection, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency is emphasized; and the principles of infectious disease as they relate to the major groups of microorganisms including bacteria, parasites (unicellular and multicellular), fungi (yeasts and molds), and viruses (including prions).
