RPCT 3059

Junior RPCT Primary Care Clerkship

Required of all third-year RPCT students. The RPCT Primary Care Clerkship is a 12-week clinical immersion experience in a rural primary care and community setting. The objectives The RPCT Primary Care Clerkship are congruent with those of the generalist Family Medicine and Community Medicine clerkships in the context of a rural experience. The majority of this time occurs in one of the rural community partnership areas, either Mountain City or Rogersville. One week is devoted to a health fair community experience with the generalist track students. One week is devoted to a family medicine residency experiences (Rogersville students work with Kingsport FM Residency and Mountain City students work with Bristol FM Residency). An alternative to the FM Residency week is to have a 1-2 week individually arranged rural clinical experience where students experience a high concentration of family oriented maternity care and gynecological care. During this clerkship, students are responsible for following patients in one of several primary care sites and for following patients in non-ambulatory care settings in the community, such as in the emergency room, hospital, EMS settings or nursing home. Additionally, students are required to complete a community project. During this clerkship students learn the approach to the ambulatory diagnosis and management of common problems experienced by rural patients. Half a day a week is dedicated toward completion of a Community Project. Housing is provided.
