IMPRESSIONISM & POST-IMPRESSIONISM

During the 1870's and 1880's, a circle of French artist developed a revolutinary style called Impressionism that debunked the conventions of the Frech Academy. THis course will examine the art of Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas, and Morisot, and will relate their unique response to modern life to the current economic, social, and political climate in Paris. Then, the paintings of Post-Impressionist van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat, and Cezanne will be analyzed in light of the "crisis" of Impressionism that occures in the late 19th century when artist sought to recapture a sense of structure and stabiltiy in painting. Students will be expected to attend two field trips to NY museums.
