COMPARATIVE APPROACHES TO LANGUAGE EDUCATION

The main emphasis in the course is given to the European concept of communicative methodology of language education. Students will become aware of the current approaches widely used internationally in the theory and practice of language education, in general, and in teaching English as a second language, in particular. Students will experience some of the techniques in the college classroom to then use them in fieldwork placements. Students will also learn about the leading approaches to European education, such as personality-oriented teaching, humanistic education and current pedagogical systems approach. The method of intercultural communication, a rapidly evolving approach applied to teaching, will also be employed. This knowledge of emerging approaches will enable students to function at a higher level of effectiveness in multicultural, interpersonal and global collaborative settings. Overall, this course will simultaneously stimulate students to learn about the most current approaches and will raise their own intercultural awareness. A variety of media resources will contribute to a better understanding of the spectrum of teaching approaches employed in the global multicultural educational environment.
