This course focuses on children's (B-6) language and literacy development. Instructional approaches and assessment tools will be demonstrated and applied in field experiences. The prospective early childhood/childhood teacher will learn processes of language acquisition; socio-cultural factors which affect development of speaking, listening, reading and writing; and distinctions between language differences and language disorders. Candidates will study and apply various approaches for teaching reading, writing, listening and speaking that can be used for students with and without disabilities in group and classroom settings. Candidates will also learn the nature and purposes of diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluation and different forms of each.
