LITERACY INSTRUCTION FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The focus of the course will be various aspects of reading instruction documented through research to be effective with students who are entitled to remedial or special education. Methods will include those used to teach word attack skills and comprehension strategies for both narrative and expository text. Commercial packages with research-demonstrated effectiveness with target population will be examined. A data-based approach to assessment and instruction will be stressed. Students will be required to apply their learning to one or more classified students.
