METHODS OF FOSTERING LITERATURE IN MATHEMATICS

This course will address key issues involving literacy in elementary mathematics. It will provide teaching skills necessary to support pupils in constructing meaning from literacy materials in mathematics aligned with state and national standards. Emphasis is placed on research-supported methods for motivating pupils, for teaching and assessing comprehension of mathematical text, vocabulary development, word identification and study strategies. Multiple approaches to organizing literacy instruction to enhance learning mathematics and for developing student interest for pupils with and without disabilities will be considered. Fieldwork is required.
