HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN WEST

This course seeks to probe the forces that brought about the exploration, settlement, and development of the Trans-Appalachian, Trans-Mississippian West. Emphasis will be placed on western expansion in the Colonial and early National periods, the importance of Manifest Destiny in the Nineteenth Century, the impact of white settlement on the Native American, Turner’s Frontier Thesis, and emerging issues in the West in the present day.
