HISTORY OF THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST

This course focuses on the modern history of the Middle East, beginning with the decline of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of al-Fatat and the Arab nationalist movement of the interwar period. Special attention will be given to the formation of Israel after World War Two, and its ongoing conflict with Arab states, including the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and the Palestinian controversy. In addition, the effect of the Iran-Iraq War and the two Gulf Wars will be assessed in reference to their long-term political, economic and security implications. Prerequisite: 3 Credits in History
