Most Americans understand the Vietnam War as something that happened in the 1960's and early 1970's. But, as this course seeks to demonstrate, American involvement cannot be fully understood apart from Vietnam's long history of foreign domination and of resistance to it. After a series of foreign occupations by the French and the Japanese beginning in the 1880s, the struggle would continue against the Americans who, almost a decade before 1954, became involved in the intricacies of Southeast Asian politics. American involvement was to last until 1975, when this great drama would reach its final act. This course will also examine the effect of the Vietnamese desire for independence on the American people during the dramatic decades of the 1960's and 1970's. Prerequisite: 3 Credits in History
