COMEDY: SHAKESPEARE'S GREAT COMEDIES

This course examines diverse theories of comedy as set forth in such work as George Meredith's Essay on Comedy (1897) and Henri Bergson's on Laughter (1900). Students will read and study representative comedies by Shakespeare, see live productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford, Greation Theatre at Oxford, and at the restored Globe Theatre in London and apply comic theory to these representations of the genre.
