Introduction to Ornithology

This introductory course covers the biology and natural history of birds. Topics include the evolutionary origins of birds and flight, avian physiology and sensory systems, migration, social behavior, reproduction, and conservation. Laboratory work explores bird structure and function and teaches the taxonomic classification and identification of birds, particularly those found in California and the western United States. Field trips (which may include one or two overnight trips) are required; students study bird identification, behavior, and ecology. The cost per student to participate in the overnight trip(s) is approximately $20-$45. This course may be used as an elective in the Field Ecology Certificate Program.
