This course will provide continued refinement of the Novice Low Level skills begun in VIET 401 while working toward the Novice Mid and High Levels. The student will gain increased accuracy; improve ability to understand and produce appropriate responses in high frequency situations utilizing learned materials, standardized messages, phrases and expressions, including numbers, dates, days, weather, time, foods, and names of family members; and improve ability to understand dis- course on an increased number of topics. Speaking and writing will be comprehensible to a sympathetic listener, including a native speaker used to interacting with non-native speakers, and will demonstrate an emerging ability to create with the language. Verbal and written expression will be limited to short, culturally appropriate communica- tion with greater accuracy and on a broader scale of topics than that found at the VIET 401 level. Students will acquire a knowledge and an appreciation of the geography, culture, and people of regions where Vietnamese is spoken and of Vietnamese speakers’ contributions to North American and world-wide culture.
