Philosophy of Language: Theory of Reference

Extensive Writing. Survey of issues and views concerning reference, or how words refer to things. Topics include names and descriptions, the distinction between sense and reference, the puzzle of non-referring terms, causal theories of reference, and possibility and necessity. Only two units of credit for students who have taken PHI 137.
