An intensive introduction to linguistic anthropology. Following a brief survey of technical linguistics, focus is on: the roles of language in society; multilingualism; language and identity; language and worldview; language, gender, class and power; language as social action; and other topics. Students carry out investigations based on models from their reading, as well as responding to the theoretical approaches of the field. Note: this course assumes that students have completed undergraduate coursework in cultural anthropology
