Standard variational problems (geodesic, time-of-transit, isoperimetric, surface, area), Euler-Lagrange equations, variational principles in mechanics, optimal control problems, necessary conditions for optimality, Pontryagin principle. Note: This course assumes that students have the equivalent of a two semester course in undergraduate analysis or advanced calculus (e.g. MATH 4310 and 4320) or introductory graduate-level coursework in analysis (e.g. MATH 5070).
