The argument: that states and empires lie at the heart of the social sciences, of the humanities, and of our everyday lives. The devil lies mainly in the details. Different states and empires serve as examples, with specific foci depending on the instructor's expertise. Stressed: how older empires haunt newer ones. Also emphasized: colonization and empire work as much "at home" as they do "abroad". The course is organized to keep problematical character of states and empires in our sights. It is organized, that is, to suggest that states and empires may often present where we ordinarily do not look for them
