This course examines how we perceive our environment through visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and taste modalities, and how perception sculpts our experience of the world around us. The course emphasizes identifying the structures and discussing the processes underlying perception. Topics covered include psychophysics (the quantitative measurement of perceptual experience), the anatomical structure of the eye, ear, tongue, nose, and skin, structures and functions of the nervous system, abnormalities in perception as results of aging or injury, commonalities and differences across modalities, and our psychological experience of perception.
