Culture and Diversity in Psychology

This course will introduce students to important concepts as they relate to culture, race, and ethnicity in psychology. We will delineate contemporary theories and research, with an emphasis on how different cultural groups within interact within a single social structure (multiculturalism). Critical thinking will be emphasized in order to examine, analyze and evaluate issues pertinent to cultural diversity as it applies to individuals and groups in American society and related research. Additionally, students will become familiar with the empirical literature as it relates to the science and practice of multicultural psychology and gain an appreciation of the experience of stigmatized minorities. Students will be evaluated through weekly assignments, in-class activities, and discussion of culturally sensitive topics
