Magic in Medieval and Early Modern Europe, 500-1700

The evolution of the role of magic in society from its ubiquitous common practice in the early Middle Ages to its deeply feared threat to social order in the Age of Enlightenment. Using texts from Medieval popes, kings, theologians, and inquisitors, students trace the changing perceptions of magic, religion, superstition and science that with dramatic social and economic societal upheavals, ultimately lead to deadly purges of imagined diabolical conspirators.
