Next to the American Revolution, the French Revolution is arguably the most important and dramatic event of the modern era. This course analyses the causes and consequences of the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte on France and the European continent. Through a combination of primary and secondary sources and focused research and writing exercises, students trace the tumultuous transformation of France from a feudal society to democratic one, and evaluate the impact of Napoleonic reforms in spreading the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity throughout Europe.
