THEA 3315

Shakespeare and Practical Dramaturgy

Exploration of the core theoretical and practical issues involved in staging Shakespeare in the present day: how to conceive of the relationship between text and performance, between the playing conditions of the original period and those of today, and the nuances of issues such as casting across lines of gender and race, and other intellectual concerns facing modern theatre companies. Students examine the role of the dramaturge as a resource on concrete matters pertaining to the special instance of Shakespeare in the theatre such as script editing, working with actors to understand their lines and playable choices, liaising with directors and designers, writing program, notes, and participating in discussions with audiences.
